Why do many people experience joint and bone pain during the Lunar New Year (Tết)?

Joint and bone pain does not only occur during Tết - it can happen at any time of the year. However, in reality, Tết is a period when joint pain is more likely to flare up and become more severe, especially among middle-aged and elderly people or those who already have underlying musculoskeletal conditions. The reasons come from several familiar but often overlooked factors:

1. Cold, rainy, seasonal weather - a “trigger” for joint pain

The transition from the end of the year to the beginning of the new year often brings noticeable weather changes: increased rainfall, cold air, high humidity, and large temperature differences between day and night. These factors can alter air pressure, blood viscosity, and body fluids, thereby increasing pressure on joint cartilage, ligaments, and joint capsules.

As a result, joints become more prone to pain, stiffness, and even pain radiating to the surrounding skin—especially noticeable in the early morning or at night.

2. House cleaning and decoration - joints under “overload”

Before Tết, almost everyone is busy cleaning, rearranging the house, and handling year-end work. These activities are often associated with improper postures such as:

  • Standing or sitting for long periods

  • Squatting or kneeling

  • Bending the back or carrying heavy objects

A sudden increase in physical activity prevents the musculoskeletal system from adapting in time, leading to pain in the hands and feet, knee pain, lower back pain, and neck–shoulder pain.

3. People with existing joint conditions are more likely to suffer severe pain

For individuals who have had or are currently experiencing conditions such as:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Ankylosing spondylitis

cold weather, improper movements, and overexertion during Tết act as “catalysts,” causing pain to recur, persist longer, and become more severe.

Tips for a more joint-friendly Tết season:

  • Keep your body warm, especially the joints

  • Break cleaning tasks into smaller sessions and avoid continuous overwork

  • Limit prolonged squatting or bending

  • Rest adequately and exercise gently with proper technique
