Rainy, humid weather and sudden changes in temperature may cause some people with joint problems to experience more pain, stiffness, and difficulty moving. Changes in temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure may cause the muscles around the joints to tighten, affecting mobility and making pain symptoms more noticeable.
The doctor recommends 4 ways to care for your joints during rainy weather:
1. Stay gently active
Avoid sitting or lying down for too long. Gentle, moderate exercises can help reduce joint stiffness.
2. Warm up thoroughly before exercising
Especially in cold or humid weather, take time to warm up your muscles and joints before physical activity.
3. Keep your body warm
Pay special attention to keeping warm, particularly around joints that are experiencing pain or discomfort.
4. Apply heat at the right time
Warm compresses and gentle massage may help relieve pain and joint stiffness. However, do not apply heat or massage vigorously when a joint is swollen, hot, red, and painful due to acute inflammation. In such cases, a cold compress may be more appropriate.
Important note: Do not massage or apply heat directly to areas with open wounds, ulcers, or infections. People with reduced sensation or severe peripheral vascular disease should also exercise caution when using heat therapy.
Joint pain during rainy weather should not be a reason to neglect physical activity. Stay active within your limits, take proper care of your joints, and seek medical attention if symptoms persist or become unusual.
