PERSISTENT JOINT PAIN: OSTEOARTHRITIS OR RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS?

PERSISTENT JOINT PAIN: OSTEOARTHRITIS OR RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS?

Many people often confuse osteoarthritis with rheumatoid arthritis because both conditions share similar symptoms, such as:

• Joint pain and stiffness, especially in the morning
• Swelling around the joints
• Difficulty moving and reduced range of motion

However, these are two completely different conditions and require accurate diagnosis for appropriate treatment.

Common signs of OSTEOARTHRITIS:

• Symptoms usually affect only one or a few specific joints and do not impact the whole body
• Pain, numbness, or tingling around the joint caused by bone spurs compressing nerves
• Joint stiffness and difficulty moving, especially after periods of rest
• The knees are the most commonly affected joints

Common signs of RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS:

• Symptoms often appear symmetrically on both sides of the body (for example, pain in both wrists)
• Pain in multiple joints accompanied by general fatigue
• Mild fever may occur
• Rheumatoid nodules or lumps may appear under the skin around the joints
• Usually begins in small joints such as finger joints before gradually spreading to larger joints

If joint pain persists, recurs frequently, or affects daily activities, avoid self-diagnosing. Early medical evaluation can help identify the exact cause and provide appropriate treatment, reducing the risk of long-term joint damage.
